A hydraulic floor jack should be checked as part of the workshop’s normal equipment routine. A brief inspection before use can identify visible damage, while a maintenance record helps the team track recurring problems and arrange repairs.

The correct service procedure depends on the model. Keep the manufacturer’s manual available and use it to confirm maintenance intervals, lubricant requirements, and repair instructions.

Inspect the Jack Before Each Use

Check for oil leaks, cracked welds, damaged components, and loose or missing parts. Examine the saddle and confirm that the wheels and handle mechanism are in suitable condition.

If the jack has suffered an impact, appears distorted, or behaves unexpectedly, remove it from service and arrange inspection. Do not continue using it simply because it can still raise a load.

Keep Dirt Away from Moving Parts

Remove accumulated dirt and keep exposed components clean. Inspect the ram for corrosion or surface damage, and follow the manual’s cleaning instructions.

Avoid abrasive treatment of polished hydraulic surfaces. Lubricate only the points specified by the manufacturer, using the recommended lubricant.

The aim is to maintain the equipment according to its design, rather than apply the same treatment to every component.

Use the Specified Hydraulic Oil

Check the manual before adding or replacing oil. Use the specified hydraulic jack oil and follow the model’s instructions for oil level and filling.

Do not substitute brake fluid or other automotive fluids. Keep contamination out of the system during servicing.

If the jack needs repeated top-ups, record the issue and arrange inspection rather than treating additional oil as a permanent solution.

Record Changes in Performance

Useful observations include uneven lifting, unexpected lowering, unusual handle resistance, or failure to reach the normal lifting height.

Record when the issue occurs and whether the jack is loaded or unloaded. Include the model number and service history when requesting support. These details help a technician assess the problem without relying on a vague description such as “the jack is weak.”

Do not adjust safety valves or dismantle hydraulic components without the appropriate service instructions and competence.

Keep a Simple Maintenance Log

A practical record can include:

  • Equipment identification and model number.
  • Inspection date and inspector’s name.
  • Visible defects or changes in operation.
  • Maintenance performed and materials used.
  • Repair status and authorization to return to service.

Store the jack as directed in its manual. Before any lifting task, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s lifting instructions and use suitable support stands; never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
